PsychrometricsPsychrometrics is the name given to the study of the thermodynamic properties of moist air, e.g. enthalpy, moisture content, dry bulb temperature, wet bulb temperature, dew point temperature, and volume etc. It is a subject that fascinates me and I have spent a lot of time studying both its mathematical calculation, and, methods of measuring its physical properties. The CIBSE Guide has a comprehensive table of Psychrometric Properties of moist air, the values of which were gained empirically. ASHRAE Fundamentals, detail methods of calculation the psychrometric properties of moist air. Physical measurement of wet bulb temperature is not easy and is prone to a significant amount of uncertainty. It also true that calculation of wet bulb temperature is not easy and the calculations contain a significant amount of uncertainty. The uncertainty level as described in the foregoing paragraph is well within acceptable parameters for air-conditioning and refrigeration applications. My interests in gaining the highest levels of accuracy were driven by the fact that I was constructing experimental laboratories, where accuracy and repeatability are of great importance. RefrigerationAs a trainee engineer I specialised in process refrigeration, in general the systems were either single or multi stage compression. A large number of the installations utilised pump-circulated refrigerant as the primary cooling media, refrigerants included, ammonia, R12 and R502. Motor Control Centres were bespoke items that included electric motor starters e.g. star-delta auto-transformer and direct-on-line using 3 phase power supplies of 415V & 3.3kV, power distribution, controls, safety interlocks, and alarms etc. I was lucky to be heavily involved in the design, construction and commissioning of these Motor Control Centres, which has proven to be a solid foundation for future career development. For a number of years I worked in close-operation with the then "Electricity Council" developing heat-pump systems. A working model of an air to water and air heat-pump designed and constructed by myself was featured in the circa 1981 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures [Click To Go To Top of Page]
